Explanation of usage rates

Research vessel usage rates are calculated to include crew, fuel, food, standard shipboard technical services and limited port logistics. To obtain a quote for ship rates and discuss ship availability, contact the Scripps Ship Scheduling Office.

Your work may require additional equipment or support that is not included in our standard service, but is available at an additional cost. Examples include portable mooring winches, specialized scientific sampling systems, and additional marine technicians for 24-hour operations. Please consult the Scripps Scheduling Office to determine whether additional charges may apply to your project.

Chargeable days are determined in accordance with policies for the Academic Research Fleet set by UNOLS (University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System). Each vessel has separate rates for operational periods and for home-port mobilization periods. Home-port mobilization charges are required by, and in compliance with, federal regulation.

As a Coastal Class research vessel, operational charges accrue on a 24-hour day basis (as opposed to a calendar day basis). Charges accrue in whole-day increments (no fractional days).

For example, a trip that departs San Diego at 0800 and returns the following calendar day at 0700 will be billed for one operational day.

Home-port mobilization charges accrue for each day loading or offloading the vessel at the Nimitz Marine Facility. Charges accrue in whole-day increments (no fractional days).

Operational charges accrue for any calendar day or fractional calendar day at sea, or in any port other than the Scripps Nimitz Marine Facility. Charges accrue in whole-day increments (no fractional days).
